Andrea S. Roa

M.A., M.S., CHES
My educational and professional experiences have made me knowledgeable of a variety of health, wellness, behavior change and learning theories to plan, coordinate and facilitate targeted activities and training for individuals, groups and the workplace that promote healthy lifestyle habits. As an adjunct professor, I conceptualize a rewarding learning experience for students that recognizes their prior knowledge and stems from introspection, the acquisition of health & wellness skills, practical application and reflection.  In addition to my role in higher education,  I am the managing owner of Compliments LLC.

My career story began in 1990.  After three years in healthcare and moving into management, I burned out quickly.   In 1993,  I decided to try something different and took my love of health, sports and fitness to the gym, becoming a fitness instructor and personal trainer.  I also became a trained make-up artist and personal services consultant, working with clothing retailers and cosmetic lines (Lancome, Prescriptives, Chanel & Georgette Klinger Salon).  My leisurely pursuits in food preparation and entertaining, inspired by my parents working in the restaurant and catering industry, led to planning events and teaching etiquette classes.  Although I believe that individuals that exhibit social grace, table manners and body confidence experience the best success, I also believe a balanced health perspective and positive health habits are essential!   After about 5 years, I returned to a hospital setting, rediscovering the personal satisfaction I once enjoyed in the healthcare industry - in staff development and community education roles.

I know first-hand the value of a strong, healthy body.  I have over twenty years of healthcare and fitness experience.  I hold a Master of Science in Health Education and a Master of Arts in Psychology.  I am a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing and a Certified Health Coach by the American Council on Exercise & Dr. Sears Wellness Institute with fitness certifications in Personal Training, Group Exercise, Yoga, Barre, Aquatic Exercise and multiple Cardio-Dance formats.  I am also a Certified Lifestyle Coach by the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists, trained and approved to deliver the CDC National Diabetes Prevention Program.

I
've worked with clients, patients and their caregivers affected by metabolic health conditions, neuromuscular disorders and cardiovascular disease as well as overweight and obese individuals, athletes, active older adults, tweens to teens, pre/post-natal women and individuals with chronic health conditions.  In 2019, I conducted and presented a research study on the topic, "Wellness Coaching to promote and increase physical activity among middle-aged to older adults".

I believe health is more complex than food & exercise and that there are biopsychosocial factors that contribute to both health and disease, which is why our programs focus on 'lifestyle-as-medicine'.  It is my desire to provide wellness solutions for middle-aged to older adults to help them age better - find the right combination of movement, nourishment, sleep, stress reducing skills, and flourishing techniques to help them move toward reaching their optimal level of physical health and well-being!
