Optimal wellness begins with having the knowledge, practical tools, and accountability to make, implement, and maintain healthy Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude and Nutrition choices.  And while most people have an idea of what they should be doing to improve their health, but have difficulty getting started or maintaining a consistent practice of positive health behaviors.  Wellness is a journey that can be slow, bumpy or static at times before arriving at your destination - there are no quick fixes!

The terms "health educator" and "health education specialist" are used interchangeably in many settings as the roles and responsibilities are very similar, yet the two are not exactly the same.  

Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES)* are professionals who have met the required minimum eligibility requirement of undergraduate and/or graduate level health education academic preparation qualifications to sit for the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing exam accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.  
A certified health education specialist (CHES) can work with individuals, public and private organizations to create, implement, oversee, and analyze strategies and programs that promote health and well-being.   They can also access and guide the health needs of individuals, taking their knowledge of health behavior theory and program planning strategies to develop interventions and facilitate programs that promote wellness for individuals, families and communities with the goal of preventing disease and self-management of chronic conditions.  

A health educator can be anyone in the health care or health care-related field from various educational backgrounds who promotes health and well-being on multiple levels or disciplines based on training i.e., community health workers, nutrition or dietician educators, and health teachers.  

*The CHES and MCHES credentials are among the over 315 NCCA accredited programs including, but not limited to:  Nursing, Counseling, Respiratory therapy.  The National Commission for Health Education Credentialing earned International accreditation to ensure consistent, comparable and reliable operations worldwide.
