My experiences have made me knowledgeable of a variety of health, wellness, behavior change and learning theories to plan, coordinate and facilitate targeted activities and training for individuals, groups and the workplace. In addition to being part-time adjunct faculty in the Physical Health Education department at Richland College, I am the managing owner of Compliments and take pleasure in sharing my training and experiences with others to empower with them with the skills and knowledge to increase their level of wellness to be the best version of themselves. I am passionate about promoting positive habits that people can incorporate into their lifestyle to achieve theiroptimal level of wellness.
I have gained an array of professional experiences that I have been able to incorporate in my business, Compliments. My career story began in 1990. After three years in healthcare and moving into management, I burned out quickly. I decided to try something different and took my love of sports and fitness to the gym, becoming a fitness instructor and personal trainer. I also became a trained make-up artist and personal services consultant, working with clothing retailers and cosmetic lines (Lancome, Chanel, Georgette Klinger Salon). I am also a food and entertaining enthusiast, appreciating the art of "presentation" and dining decorum. My leisurely pursuits have led to event planning and teaching etiquette classes too. Although I believe that individuals that exhibit social grace and body confidence experience the best success, I believe a balanced health perspective is essential - it is not better to look good than to feel good! After about 5 years, I returned to a hospital setting, rediscovering the personal satisfaction and enjoyment I once enjoyed in the healthcare industry.
I know first-hand the value of a strong, healthy body from personal and professional experiences. I have over twenty years of healthcare and fitness experience. I hold a Master of Science in Health Education along with a Psychology Graduate Certificate, plus I am a Certified Health coach. I think it is important to state that Health Coach professionals from the Dr. Sears Wellness Institute (DSWI) earn a certification that embodies five core values: whole food nutrition, a positive learning environment, simple and sustainable methods to develop a healthy lifestyle, affordable ways to live healthy lives, and education built on solid, proven research. A science-based approach to wellness is taken that promotes preventative care based on Dr. Sears four pillars of health – Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude and Nutrition. This approach is inline with the biopsychosocial model of health and sets the stage for health and well-being.
I am also a certified personal trainer, group fitness and yoga instructor with continuing education in nutrition and special populations. I've worked with patients and their caregivers affected by metabolic health conditions, neuromuscular disorders and cardiovascular disease as well as overweight and obeseindividuals, athletes, active older adults, tweens to teens, pre/post-natal women and individuals with chronic health conditions. As a holistic health coach, I believe health is more than food & exercise, which is why our programs focus on overall wellness. I help people find the right combination of nutrition, supplements, stress reduction and physical activity to help them move toward reaching their optimal health (inside and out)!
